If You Ask Me by Libby Hubscher is classified as a romance novel but I think it is so much more than that.

Violet Covington pens Dear Sweetie, the most popular advice column in the state of North Carolina. She has an answer for how to politely handle any difficult situation…until she discovers her husband, Sam, has been cheating on her. Furious and out of sensible solutions, Violet leaves her filter at the door and turns to her column to air her own frustrations. The new, brutally honest Dear Sweetie goes viral, sending more shock waves through Violet’s life. When she burns Sam’s belongings in a front-yard, late-night bonfire, a smoking-hot firefighter named Dez shows up to douse the flames, and an unexpected fling quickly shows potential to become something longer lasting.

A lot of people want to see the old polished Violet return—including her boss, who finds her unpredictability hard to manage, and Sam, who’s begging for another chance. But Dez appreciates Violet just the way she is—in fact, he can’t get enough of her. The right answers don’t come easily when Violet finds herself at her own personal crossroads. But maybe, by getting real, Violet can write her own happy ending.

Imagine coming home and finding your husband in your bed with his lover. That’s what happened to Violet Covington. She is obviously furious and uses her column Dear Sweetie to deal with her frustrations. Yes it is funny when she does this but she doesn’t realize the chain reaction that can happen when one speaks out in a mean manner. While the book has a romance aspect to things, I found that the book was more about self discovery. Violet has always been the perfect put together wife, daughter and employee who puts her own needs behind others. When Sam cheats it crushes her but makes her dig deep to see things weren’t what they seemed. And while her self discovery comes with some bumps along the way she learns what she needs to cope and find love.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book. Violet reminded me of myself always trying to please other and putting herself last. I could see her snap and imagine that’s what I would do if I was ever in her situation. This is a great book that although is light and funny does hit some hard topics.
